A biopharma company

Leadership for the biopharma industry

Based in England, this small but market-leading company was bought by a very large pharmaceutical company headquartered in the US. To achieve integration where the smaller company saw itself as clearly superior and unique in terms of being a values-driven company, a programme was developed in which everyone in the company (n=350) attended a one day workshop in groups of about 20 over a two month period.

In preparation the expressed values were cross-mapped with the Competency Framework that the larger company has been using for some time and during the workshop the results were presented in terms of the similarities across the companies. The participants had the opportunity to think these data through and to ask questions and to discuss any anxieties that might remain about the value of their work to the parent company.

Many of the staff in England felt that the process was one of integration rather than absorption. While there had been open talk of “seeking other opportunities”, almost all the staff remained.
